Star Wars Episode 7? What Will Disney Do After Buying Lucasfilm?

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - MAY 20: In this handout...Disney dropped a bombshell this afternoon with word that they are buying Lucasfilm for more than $4 billion, and plan to release a new Star Wars Episode 7 movie in 2015. Sci-Fi fans will be going crazy over the possibilities here, which could range from majestic to sacrilegious depending on how it turns out.

For years, George Lucas had downplayed the possibility of moving the Stars Wars saga forward on the big screen, but now he’s handing off that task to others. Here’s an excerpt from Disney’s press release:

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”

Disney is known to be a bit of a recycling factory with their TV shows, so we can only imagine some of the scarier possibilities:

  • Jedi of Waverly Place
  • The Suite Life of R2-D2 & C-3PO
  • Good Luck Chewbacca
  • Phineas & Fett

The Prequel trilogy was met with horror by many at the time (although upon watching them again recently I enjoyed them immensely), and the digitally remastered Episode 4: A New Hope took revisionism too far at points (Han shot first!). Anticipation will surely build sky-high for Star Wars Episode VII, no matter who is involved either in front of, or behind, the camera.

So is this good news or bad news for Star Wars fans?
